Scientists Are Developing An Acne Vaccine

You're not the only one who's still battling breakouts.

About 50 million Americans are diagnosed with acne every year, according to acne specialist Dr. Joshua Zeichner. However, there's no cure for the skin condition because scientists and doctors haven't determined the exact cause of it-- yet.

Zeichner says doctors at the University of California, San Diego, are working on an acne vaccine that could ensure future generations won't have to deal with pesky pimples, zits and cysts.

Doctors know acne is caused, in part, by P. acnes bacteria, which we have our entire life. The bacteria is good for us in some ways, but scientists are creating a vaccine that can block the negative acne-causing effects of P. acnes without killing the bacteria itself.

Doctors will soon begin testing the vaccine on patients during clinical trials.
