The Earth is okay after a close flyby from a massive asteroid.  Gay Yee Hill of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory described the moment as the asteroid whizzed by. The space rock about half the length of a football field came within about 17-thousand miles of our home planet, well within some of the weather and TV satellites in orbit. 

It's now hurtling away from the Earth at about eight miles per second.  Scientists say today's close call has nothing to do with the meteor that smashed into the atmosphere over Russia today.  That created a shockwave that smashed windows and injured hundreds of people with flying glass.
